“Iron Man 2″ stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Bettany and Kate Mara. Terrence Howard, who co-starred in the original “Iron Man” movie, is replaced by Don Cheadle.
That’s quite the cast list. Causing the biggest stir of all lately has been the newly reinvigorated Mickey Rourke, who will take center stage in the film as villain Ivan ‘Whiplash’ Vanko, who director Jon Favreau says has constructed his own version of the iconic suit/armor.
There has been an initial outburst of fanboy confusion, and isolated fits of outrage regarding the first picture of ‘Whiplash’ above, with many comments about the rather unimpressive look of the suit - but it’s probably safe to assume, as many have pointed out, that this is merely a prototype or early version of the suit that the character creates.
We certainly aren’t going to see a version of the suit that he will don later in the film this early.
Favreau says that watching Rourke in his hit “Sin City” and “The Wrestler” roles was a great influence in not only encouraging him to cast Rourke, but in developing the character: “It was very important that the villain be as compelling as can be. … Once I thought of Mickey in that role, it made me understand how to shape the story.” Source
“Iron Man 2″ is set be released on May 7th 2010.
