Mickey Rourke As Whiplash In Ironman 2

“Iron Man 2″ stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Bettany and Kate Mara. Terrence Howard, who co-starred in the original “Iron Man” movie, is replaced by Don Cheadle.

That’s quite the cast list. Causing the biggest stir of all lately has been the newly reinvigorated Mickey Rourke, who will take center stage in the film as villain Ivan ‘Whiplash’ Vanko, who director Jon Favreau says has constructed his own version of the iconic suit/armor.

There has been an initial outburst of fanboy confusion, and isolated fits of outrage regarding the first picture of ‘Whiplash’ above, with many comments about the rather unimpressive look of the suit - but it’s probably safe to assume, as many have pointed out, that this is merely a prototype or early version of the suit that the character creates.

We certainly aren’t going to see a version of the suit that he will don later in the film this early.

Favreau says that watching Rourke in his hit “Sin City” and “The Wrestler” roles was a great influence in not only encouraging him to cast Rourke, but in developing the character: “It was very important that the villain be as compelling as can be. … Once I thought of Mickey in that role, it made me understand how to shape the story.” Source

“Iron Man 2″ is set be released on May 7th 2010.

Iron Man 2 lands at Andrews Air Force Base

With Iron Man 2 reaching the halfway mark of primary photography the crew landed on Edwards Air Force Base May 11-13. Hollywood productions have a long-standing relationship with the base, they house almost every plane in the air force arsenal and are well prepared to move and arrange the background for shots. Not only does the hardware make for a great backdrop but the airmen as well.

“More so than the landscape or aircraft, are the people.” said Denis Stewart, Ironman II producer. “It’s almost impossible to have background performers who are actors emulate real military personnel. The way they conduct themselves, wear the uniform and talk adds as much authenticity to the film as the aircraft.”

With the Stark legacy in military weaponry its not surprising that Iron Man 2 would attempt to be as realistic as possible. But its a bit surprising to see the Air Force itself promoting their role in the movie. The Air force press posted an article

[First Look] Robert Downey Jr. Wearing ‘Iron Man 2′

People.com has premiered a new set photo from Iron Man 2 featuring Downey Jr. in the new armor. Check it out after the jump.

Screen Rant explains the armor:
Looks like there are some obvious differences in this suit compared to the Mark I armor from the last film. The gauntlets are much beefier on top of his hands, there are some gold highlights in the rib cage area and the chest piece looks redesigned as well. Looks like the tricep area is beefed up along with the shoulders, too, giving the impression (to me, anyway) of a more powerful armor.
In case you missed it here is another photo from USA Today a couple days ago:
Iron Man 2 is set for a May 7th, 2010 release.

First Promotional ‘Iron Man 2′ Movie Still

First Promotional Iron Man 2 Movie Still

The first photo from the new ‘Iron Man 2′ movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, has just been released by USA Today.

I admit I was a late azz and was twittering about two weeks ago saying that I was totally stoked to be the last person on the face of the earth to watch this film. My ghetto movie outlets and I are firm acquaintances and I was so interested to find out what all the hype was about. I must say that I concur with everyone else who has seen the film and thought it was utterly bitchin’. Not quite what I expected, but it was full of strong and interesting characters and several pleasant surprises. I’ll try not to be such a slow poke this time and watch the sequel some time this decade.

The people at Rope of Silicon (via ONTD) are saying they expect Iron Man 2 to have a massive presence at Comic Con this year in San Diego just as it did in 2007, when it came out the obvious winner with the crowd at the convention. At that time it was a major underdog and a lesser known comic entity to general audiences at that time. The director Jon Favreau realizes it telling USA Today, “I really enjoyed when we were a dark horse and no one knew much about us. … I hope we can find that place again.”

Favreau, has been Twittering from the set about his experiences working on the movie.
“How many superheroes are open about their true identities?” Favreau asks. “We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore.”
